On Your Way to School

Kindergarten is coming up! Get ready for the big day with school stories,
crafts, songs, and a short bus ride. Your first day of school is sure
to be a fun day! For kids entering kindergarten in the fall. Please
register at the Youth Services Desk beginning Friday, July 27.

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY
at the PRUYN HOUSE
Sunday, September 9 ,from 12:00-4:00 PM
Visit us at the beautiful Pruyn House and gardens for this annual family
festival! The day will be filled with old-time craft demonstrations
such as sheep shearing, rope making, blacksmithing, quilting, and spinning,
plus many other children’s activities, music, and food. You’ll
see firsthand what life was like in the “old days!” Don’t
forget to stop in for storytimes with us while you’re there! Free.

SCRAPBOOKING
Friday - Sunday, September 14-16
This September, we have a 3 day weekend to scrap our summer memories!
Print your photos, gather your supplies, and haul them over to the library
for some creative camaraderie. We’ll have great giveaways and lots
of artistic tools for you to use. Hours are Friday from 6:00 to 11:00;
Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00; and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00. For kids 12
years & older and adults. Please register in Youth Services.
PINWHEELS FOR PEACE PROJECT
Tuesday - Friday, September 18-21
Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by
two art teachers in Florida, as a way for their students to express
their desire for peace in the world. Since the first year, the project
has grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted to three and a half million
pinwheels in 2011! This year, our Tweens Read and Volunteer (TRAVOL)
Team is very excited to participate in the project! Over the summer,
the Team read and discussed the book “Whirligig” by Paul Fleischman.
Then, they volunteered at the library to help younger kids and families
make pinwheels for the project. The Team will plant the pinwheels
across the library’s front lawn for September 21, the International
Day of Peace, along with millions of others around the world. They hope
to raise awareness of the importance of peace at every level: personal,
local, national, and global. Please stop in Youth Services to
make a pinwheel, and help us to celebrate International Day of Peace
with “whirled peace!”
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON!
Friday, September 28 @ 6:30 PM
A special showing of the PG movie “How to Train Your Dragon”
in anticipation of the live spectacular show coming to Albany! Fire-breathing
dragons are coming to Albany’s Times Union Center from October
3 through 7 in Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon Live
Spectacular.” The show boasts 23 dragons, some with wingspans of
up to 46 feet, Viking warriors and world-class circus artists and acrobats,
to perform against a state-of-the-art, wall-to-floor immersive projection
measuring more than 20,000 square feet. Get ready for this big event
by bringing the kids to see the movie beforehand!
Free tickets are available beginning Saturday, September 15 in Youth
Services.
I LOVE YARN DAY!
Friday, October 12
Attention knitters, young and old! Through the month of September, come
in to pick up instructions for making your own knitted square. Then,
bring the finished piece in to us on I Love Yarn Day, Friday, October
12, so that we can make lap robes for local Veterans in time for Veterans’
Day in November!
TWEEN NIGHT OUT
Friday, October 12 from 7:00-9:00 PM
Call your friends and come after-hours for pizza, soda, & snacks*;
DJ music & dancing; Wii games & more! $2.00 will be collected
at registration. For kids in 5th-8th grades. Please register in person
beginning Saturday, September 15 in Youth Services.
SCARY STORIES TOLD IN
THE DARK!
Friday, October 26 from 7:00-8:00 PM
For those of you who are brave enough to hear some spooky stories, bring
a friend for spine-tingling tales! If you have a favorite of your own,
you’re invited to share it too. It’s an after-hours evening
of chills and thrills! Gross grub to be served.* Be there if you dare!
For kids in grades 4 and up. Please register in person beginning Saturday,
September 15 in Youth Services.

STAMP CLUB
Saturdays @ 9:30 AM: September 22, October 6 & 20, November 3 &
7, December 1 & 15
Travel the world without leaving your seat! Join us Saturday mornings
at our new Stamp Club, for kids in grades 4-6. You will discover how
to collect stamps, determine their value, and display them; and see
why so many people are fascinated by them! The Stamp Club instructor
is retired 4th grade teacher Tony Zuelsdorf, who is also an experienced,
avid collector. Used stamps will be supplied at no charge. No experience
is necessary, but faithful attendance will make it successful. Please
register in Youth Services.
CHESS CLUB
Tuesdays @ 6:30 PM: September 25, October 9 & 23, November 6
Enjoy a challenging game of chess while you strengthen your skills and
strategies! Bring a friend or meet new ones who share your interest
in the classic art of chess. Parent volunteer Matthew Rienhardt will
lead the group. For kids in second grade & older. Please register
in person beginning Saturday, September 15 in Youth Services.
LEGO CLUB
Thursdays @ 4:00 PM: September 27 through November 3
Are you a Lego-maniac? Bring a friend and your imaginations! We have
lots of Legos for you to use. Each week, we’ll display your buildings
in Youth Services for all to enjoy. For kids in grades 2-5. Please register
in person beginning Saturday, September 15 in Youth Services.
MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK
CLUB
Saturdays @ 2:00 PM: September 29 & October 27
The Mother-Daughter Book Club is not merely about books. It is about
mothers & daughters, girls & women, and how reading & talking
enriches our relationships with one another. Spend the afternoon together
and enjoy our homemade refreshments too!* Girls in grades 5-8 are invited
with Mom, Grandma or an aunt. The first book will be chosen for you;
then at the first session, we will decide which books to read in the
coming months. We meet once a month from September through April. Please
register in person beginning Friday, August 31 in Youth Services.
SUPEREADERS (K and 1st
grades)
Thursdays @ 6:30 PM: October 11 & November 8
Join us for special one-on-one time with your son or daughter! When
you register, you’ll get a book to take home and read together.
Then we’ll meet to talk briefly about the book, enjoy some fun
activities, and share a snack.* The Supereaders Club will meet the second
Thursday of the month. For kids in kindergarten & first grade with
a parent. Please register in person to pick up your copy of the book,
starting Saturday, September 15 in Youth Services. No phone registrations.
BOOK BUSTERS (2nd and
3rd grades)
Thursdays @ 6:30 PM: October 25 & November 29
Enjoy time reading with your child as s/he continues to discover the
wonderful world of books! When you register, you will get a copy of
a book to read together at home. Then come to the library for a lively
book discussion, activities, and a snack!* Book Busters will meet the
fourth Thursday of the month. For 2nd and 3rd graders with a parent.
