Exam Announcements

Exam announcements posted on this page are for Civil Service candidates only. Recruitment for certain Town positions is continuous. Other positions are announced as the need arises. Descriptions of these positions will be posted when examinations for them are scheduled.

Civil Service exam announcements are categorized in either one of the following categories:

Competitive | Non-Competitive | Labor

Competitive Class

The competitive class of civil service consists of positions for which it is practicable to determine the merit and fitness of applicants by competitive examinations. These examinations are either open competitive, that is, open to all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications for the position; or, promotional, for those individuals already serving in a lower position within the same jurisdiction as the existing vacancy.

Provisional appointments may be made to positions in the competitive class if no list of eligible candidates exists. All provisional appointees are subject to passing a competitive examination and be reachable on any list established as a result of such an examination.

Continuous recruitment positions can be applied for at any time, and the eligible list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur. The personnel officer of Town of Colonie reserves the right to terminate continuous recruitment and re-establish a periodic, announced-date type of examination.

OPEN-COMPETITIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Open-competitive examinations are open to the general public. The applicant must meet the minimum educational and experience qualifications cited on the examination announcements. Please read the minimum qualifications carefully as the processing fee is non-refundable.

Non-Competitive Class

The non-competitive class of civil service consists of positions for which using a competitive examination to determine the merit and fitness of the applicants has been found to be not practicable.

Labor Class

The labor class of civil service consists of unskilled labor positions for which no competitive examination is practicable; however, applicants may be tested as to their fitness for employment.

Exam Payment methods

The following payment methods are accepted by the Colonie Civil Service Department:

  • In-person: check or money order
  • By mail (check or money order) payable to:

  • Online Payments: The Town of Colonie Civil Service Department accepts online payments through Velocity Payments. The following payments methods are accepted:
    • Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express
    • Online payments service fees are as follows: all debit and credit cards: 2.49%.
    • Note that applicant name, exam number (can be located on the exam announcement), and appropriate fee amount are required when using the online payment system.
