You will be required to sign the Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements agreement as part of your application for a Residential Building Permit or if you need to do any work inside a residential dwelling.

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements
Before you get started
The Building Code requires for any and all interior renovations, alterations and / or additions to a residential dwelling that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors need to be installed to comply with the Residential Building Code of the New York State.
Sign agreement
In lieu of a floor plan of the existing dwelling showing the appropriate location of all required detectors, the property owner and / or permit applicant agrees to install the detectors as part of the work under the current permit they are applying for (see the guide on How to obtain a Residential Building permit for more details or download the Residential Building / Zoning Permit application). All of these needs to be inspected as part of your permit.

Requirements for Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors shall be installed in the following locations:
- Within each sleeping room (bedroom) on each story.
- Outside each separate bedroom (sleeping room) in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom (sleeping room).
- On each additional story of the dwelling, including basements.
Requirements for Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Carbon monoxide detectors detectors shall be installed in the following locations:
- Within each dwelling unit on each story containing a bedroom.
- Outside a sleeping area, within 15 feet of such area.
- On any story having a carbon monoxide source.
Carbon monoxide detectors are not required in a structure that contains no carbon monoxide source (i.e. furnace, fireplace, stove, barbecue, garden tools and generators).
Requirements for power sources
- New construction - Requires electric power source interconnected
- Alterations / repairs - Battery power detectors are accepted
All forms MUST be legible and must contain complete address including zip code.
