Welcome to the Town of Colonie website. As you browse our site, I hope you will find it useful and informative. We strive to deliver a comprehensive tool that residents and visitors can use to find information about Town operations and services, meetings and agendas, news and events.
Our diversity, rich history, and cultural opportunities make the Town of Colonie a wonderful place to call home. We are proud that Colonie was recently named the region’s “Best Community” by more than 10,000 readers in the annual Times Union readers’ poll. We agree!
The Town has been the center of growth in the Capital Region since 1950. Located in the heart of Tech Valley, it is one of the most desirable locations for residential and commercial development in upstate New York. It is our goal to maintain a strong, vibrant economy.
Year after year, Colonie has been named one of the safest communities in the nation. Our Town Police Department and Emergency Medical Services Department have received national recognition for excellence, and we are fortunate to have 12 outstanding volunteer fire departments working together to keep us safe. The public and private schools in Colonie are also among the nation’s best.
Beginning as a Dutch settlement in the 1600s, the name Colonie is derived from the Dutch term “Colonye,” meaning the settlement outside the city. Today, Colonie offers a stimulating mix of urban, suburban, and rural communities. The region’s most populous suburb with nearly 82,000 residents, our population doubles each day as people from throughout the Capital Region come to Colonie to work and do business.
Colonie is also the region’s largest town, covering more than 57 square miles. It includes two incorporated villages, Colonie and Menands, as well as several hamlets and unincorporated population centers – Boght Corners, Latham, Lisha Kill, Loudonville, Mansville, Maplewood, Maywood, Newtonville, Roessleville, Stanford Heights, Schuyler Heights, Verdoy, and West Albany.
Our highest priority is to provide a high quality of life for our residents. Citizen participation is an essential component to maintaining an efficient and transparent government. I welcome your ideas, concerns, and feedback. Thank you for visiting our website.
